The APB Charlotte project by The Whitaker Group reflects a bold intersection of street culture, community, and contemporary retail design. Located within The Collective on Tuckaseegee in Charlottes historic West Side, the space was conceived as more than a retail environment it functions as a cultural hub rooted in skateboarding, fashion, art, and youth engagement. The larger development includes a 13,000-sq foot retail campus with ten retail units and the nations first privately held, Black-owned, publicly accessible non-DIY skatepark.

Completed in collaboration with The Whitaker Group, Plexus Architecture, and Red Elephant Design Shop. Contributions included design coordination, project management, and the curation of furniture and decor.

APB Charlotte embraces an industrial-modern aesthetic layered with raw authenticity and sculptural detailing. The space balances clean architectural lines with expressive visual moments, creating an immersive environment that feels both elevated and deeply connected to skate culture. Matte black steel framing, exposed structural elements, oversized porcelain tile flooring, and warm oak millwork establish a grounded, masculine material palette. The contrast between dark architectural finishes and natural wood tones creates depth while reinforcing the brands refined streetwear identity.

The custom feature wall acts as a focal point within the space, incorporating graphic circular cutouts and illuminated branding that introduce movement and visual rhythm. Floating wood shelving and integrated display systems maintain an open gallery-like feel, allowing merchandise and community interaction to remain central to the experience. Glass storefront elements and layered transparency throughout the interior create sightlines that visually connect the retail environment to the skate culture influence embedded within the project.
